Ki’suk kyukyit kukunmakut!
This year, in conjunction with our brothers and sisters of the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, we will be preparing for a canoe trek from the Kootenai Tribe Reservation to Porthill Idaho on June 20/14. What is now Porthill Idaho was once home to the Yaqan Nukiy people.
To remember our home stead and to empower our youth we wish to assemble a canoe team. A group of 8 Kootenai Tribe youth and a group of 8 Lower Kootenay Band youth will paddle the waters of the Kootenay River to assert our sovereignty in our home lands. If you are a Ktunaxa youth between the ages of 16-29, we want you to become a part of our canoe team. From now until June, we will train to become physically fit to make this trek in the same waters as our ancestors did. A small village will be set up on the shores of Porthill to celebrate Aboriginal Day with traditional activities for the whole family.
